The complete rattan bed buying guide

What is rattan?

Rattan is part of the palm family, found in tropical regions including Africa, Asia and Australia. It’s incredibly strong, but also lightweight and flexible, making it ideal to craft woven furniture from. Strands of rattan are tightly woven between support poles to make rattan headboards.

Of course, some of us will already know rattan furniture well. Familiar in the bohemian boudoirs and lounges of the seventies, in later years it became something you might only have seen outdoors. Now it’s back in a big way, dominating the design scene and earning its place inside of the home too.

While mostly seen in natural wood colours, there are also options for painted rattan furniture available.

Are rattan beds sturdy?

Don’t be fooled by its soft appearance – rattan is incredibly sturdy and will last for many years. Though it’s flexible enough to weave, rattan itself is a very durable material.

Bear in mind price is usually a factor; higher quality rattan tends to be sturdier than cheaper options. The best headboards will have densely woven strands of premium-quality rattan.

What are the benefits of rattan bedframes?

There are many benefits to owning a rattan bedframe, not least its on-trend aesthetics. Rattan beds are undoubtedly contemporary and stylish yet ooze vintage charm.

Unlike most woven patio furniture, rattan is a completely natural and biodegradable material, making it an excellent choice for the environmentally conscious. It can be grown sustainably, and because it’s lightweight, its transportation leaves a smaller carbon footprint.

Rattan appeals to a range of tastes. Whether your style is minimalist, maximalist, or somewhere in between. From beds, to mirrors, to lampshades, rattan is versatile; adding intrigue, texture and sculptural elements to any room.

And its classic, sophisticated look will ensure the trend is here to stay, so you don’t need to worry about it looking dated in a few years either.

Rattan is extremely durable and long-lasting – if you buy well, you won’t need to replace your bed for a long time. It’s a worthwhile investment that will stand the test of time.

How to clean a rattan bed frame

Rattan beds are surprisingly easy to keep clean. As with everything in your home, beds get dusty, so we recommend vacuuming your bedframe regularly, using the soft brush attachments on your vacuum.

When you want to give your bed a more thorough clean, you can use water, but it’s important not to get rattan too wet. Fill a bowl with warm water and mild soap (a couple of drops of washing-up liquid will do). Then, using a soft sponge or cloth, gently wipe the bubbles over the bedframe – the moisture will clean the rattan without getting it too wet.

You can use a soft paintbrush or toothbrush to get in between the more intricate detailing of your rattan.

Are rattan headboards comfortable?

As you might expect, rattan headboards don’t offer the same level of comfort as a padded, upholstered headboard. That said, they are more comfortable than solid wood or metal headboards – but you will probably want to add a pillow or two behind you.

Are rattan headboards strong?

Again, rattan is an incredibly strong and durable material, but price does usually have an impact on the quality of the headboard. Expect to pay a little more for a higher quality rattan, and look for a close, dense weave for the strongest.

How do you attach a rattan headboard?

You should always check with your supplier for instructions specific to your headboard. If your headboard comes with mounting holes, you may be able to simply screw the headboard on to your bed.

However, in many cases, rattan headboards are built to standalone, meaning you can simply place them between the bed and the wall.

But if you want that extra reassurance, you can use self-locking ties to attach the headboard to the bed. Or, depending on your DIY skills, you could drill your own mounting holes into the headboard and buy the hardware you need to secure it to your bed.
